Health Benefits of Using Lavender Essential Oil

Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome have recorded a variety of uses for Lavender oil, from being a powerful agent of the mummification process to its purification property for deep wound cleaning. It is a constant in ancient healing and wellness, where it is also used for its relaxation properties and as a relief for stress and difficulty in sleeping.

This influence extended up to the Middle Ages, where it became even more famous during the plague as a flea-repellent. And this trend of using Lavender for healing continues up to today, especially when used in bubble baths.

Lavender oil, derived from the Lavandula Angustifolia plant, is a versatile essential oil that has been used for cosmetic and medicinal uses all throughout history, extending back to Cleopatra’s time.

Skin-related Problems & Issues

Lavender oil has become popular primarily as a solution to a lot of skin conditions and issues. Cleopatra started this trend and has transcended time to the modern days. Some of the specific skin conditions that lavender oil can be used for are:

  • Acne: Kills bacteria and prevents breakouts
  • Eczema: Keeps eczema at bay by reducing inflammation
  • Psoriasis: Lessens skin irritation and cleanse the skin
  • Hyperpigmentation & Darkening Skin: Reduces discoloration, inflammation, redness, and blotchiness
  • Face Wrinkles: Protects skin from free radicals through antioxidants found in the oil
  • Fungal Infections: Destroys fungal cell membranes and stops fungal activity
  • Insect Bites: Relieves itching and inflammation and kills bacteria

Wounds

Lavender oil has wound-healing properties that accelerate the healing of wounds. According to an Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine study, lavender oil is found to have faster TENS or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. When compared to other oils, lavender is at the top of the list in skin tissue healing.

Lavender oil’s application on small wounds includes a mixture of coconut oil or tamanu oil with lavender oil and putting it on a cotton ball.

Anxiety Issues

When focusing on self-care, you should not only focus on your physical health but also your mental and emotional health. Anxiety is one of the major issues experienced today, especially with all the sudden lockdowns and social distancing requirements for this pandemic.

Lavender oil has calming effects that can help people with anxiety issues be more at ease and calm. In fact, a study from Physiology & Behavior published in 2005 reveals that people who breathed in lavender scent before their dental appointments are less anxious and have a better mood after.  An International Journal of Psychiatry in Clinical Practice review article also reveals that Silexan, a lavender oil medicine, has anxiety-reducing effects on patients.

Lavender oil is an effective and perfect addition to a calming bath, not just for skincare routine but also as an excellent relaxation and anxiety-reducing method.

Relaxation

Lavender, researches suggest, is able to promote relaxation and aid in other conditions, including restlessness, insomnia, anxiety, and depression.

Hair Loss

Alopecia areata is a known condition, where the hair is lost in some/all areas of the body. According to researchers, Lavender oil is a good treatment that promotes hair growth over the course of 7 months.

If you are having a rough day and want some self-love time, lavender oil might just be the perfect partner for you. The skincare benefits and wound-healing properties are also excellent advantages you can explore. Feel like Cleopatra and use lavender oil and scent to keep you at peace and make you feel like the queen that you are.
